Are dust shell models well-suited to explain interferometric data of late-type stars in the near-infrared?

چکیده
Recently available near-infrared interferometric data on late-type stars show a strong increase of diameter for asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars between the K (2.0 − 2.4 μm) and L (3.4 − 4.1 μm) bands. Aiming at an explanation of these findings, we chose the objects α Orionis (Betelgeuse), SW Virginis, and R Leonis, which are of different spectral types and stages of evolution, and which are surrounded by circumstellar envelopes with different optical thicknesses. For these stars, we compared observations with spherically symmetric dust shell models. Photometric and 11 μm interferometric data were also taken into account to further constrain the models. – We find the following results. For all three AGB stars, the photosphere and dust shell model is consistent with the multi-wavelength photometric data. For α Orionis the model dust shell has a very small optical depth (0.0065 at 11 μm); the visibility data and model in K and L are essentially entirely photospheric with no significant contribution from the dust, and the visibility data at 11 μm show a strong dust signature which agrees with the model. For SW Virginis the model dust shell has a small optical depth (0.045 at 11 μm); in K the visibility data and model are essentially purely photospheric, in L the visibility data demand a larger object than the photosphere plus dust model allows, and at 11 μm there was no data available. For R Leonis the model dust shell has a moderate optical depth (0.1 at 11 μm); in K and L the visibility data and model situation is similar to that of SW Vir, and at 11 μm the visibility data and model are in agreement. – We conclude that AGB models comprising a photosphere and dust shell, although consistent with SED data and also interferometric data in K and at 11 μm, cannot explain the visibility data in L; an additional source of model opacity, possibly related to a gas component, is needed in L to be consistent with the visibility data.

Near and Mid-ir Sub-arcsecond Structure of the Dusty Symbiotic Star R Aqr
The results of a high-resolution interferometric campaign targeting the symbiotic long-period variable (LPV) R Aqr are reported. With both near-infrared measurements on baselines out to 10 m and mid-infrared data extending to 32 m, we have been able to measure the characteristic sizes of regions from the photosphere of the LPV and its extended molecular atmosphere, out to the cooler circumstell...

Asymmetries and motions in the dust shell surrounding Mira A (o Ceti) are reported. Measurements were taken with the UCBerkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI), a three-element interferometer operating at 11.15 m. At the time of these observations, it was in a linear, east-west configuration with a maximum baseline of 12 m and thus had a resolution of better than 100mas. Three years of da...
متن کاملMid-infrared interferometry on spectral lines: II. Continuum (dust) emission around IRC +10216 and VY CMa
The U. C. Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer has measured the mid-infrared visibilities of the carbon star IRC +10216 and the red supergiant VY CMa. The dust shells around these sources have been previously shown to be time-variable, and these new data are used to probe the evolution of the dust shells on a decade time-scale, complementing contemporaneous studies at other wavelengths. The 11 km fringe visibilities of IRC ]10011 (\ CIT3) and IRC ]10420 have been measured at baselines ranging from 2 to 14 m with a two-telescope interferometer. The visibility data provide onedimensional proÐles of these two stars and their immediate surroundings with higher resolution in this spectral range than is presently possible with a single-aperture telescope. Spherically symmetric radia...

With the Infrared Space Observatory, we conducted 3×3-pixel imaging photometry of twelve luminosity class III stars, which were previously presumed to have dust particles around them, at far infrared wavelengths (60 and 90μm). Eleven out of twelve targets show a peak of excess (above photosphere) far infrared emission at the location of the star, implying that the dust particles are truly assoc...
